Create Menu Bar App for Scratchpad sheets
under review
Mike Schinkel
I came here today because I finally got tired enough of having to open Soulver and wait for it to load and then create a new sheet just so I can just a quick scratch-pad type sheet.
I scanned existing suggestions and noticed you have mentioned creating a "QuickSolver" app for similar types of questions, and I downloaded it but did not find it to address the use-cases I am hoping you could address.
What I would like is a menu bar app that when clicked would reveal a small-sized window showing a single sheet with (almost?) identical features to that which Soulver itself offers. This sheet could be resized and then would remember the size and location next time the user clicks the icon.
The difference between this and Soulver the app would be that this sheet windows would support only one sheet at a time, would not have a left sidebar, and could have three (3) buttons at the top of bottom of the window:
- Clear the sheet
- Move the sheet to a "Scratchpads" folder in Soulver and then do #1
- Do #2 and then open Soulver with that Scratchpad sheet having focus
What do you think?

Zac: BTW, I just found https://numbr.dev that you mention elsewhere, which meets my needs for scratchpad sheet, but not my desire to have it integrated with Soulver.
Franky, if Numbr.dev is continually enhanced, there might be not reason to upgrade Soulver in the future.
So...maybe reconsider your resolution for this suggestion?

Also, maybe consider creating a "SoulverFiddle" like https://jsfiddle.net/ where people could share their calculations? That would have a much more viral model than your current app, and your revenue model could be upsells to the desktop app which would continue to have folders for managing lots of solutions.
Something to consider...? 🤷♂️

Mike Schinkel: Oh there are a lot of web-based Soulver clones. I'm native app guy though – my primary interest with this project is making the best Soulver experience possible for the Mac & iPad. Web-based apps are definitely more "viral" (and better for collaboration), but I think there's still a place in the world for wonderfully crafted native apps like Things, iA Writer, Bear, etc.
